THE Debut FICTION PROJECT
AN EXCITING OPPORTUNITY FOR NEW (OR NOT SO NEW)
WRITERS TO HAVE THEIR WORK READ AND SCRUTINISED BY AN EXPERIENCED FICTION EDITOR,
WHO WILL OFFER ADVICE ON IMPROVEMENT - POSSIBLY LEADING TO PUBLICATION IN A
NEW SHORT STORY MAGAZINE TO BE PUBLISHED SOON. WE ARE CURRENTLY CONSIDERING
MATERIAL FOR INCLUSION IN THE FIRST ISSUE OF DEBUT - THE BRAND NEW FICTION MAGAZINE. SHORT STORIES ON ANY
SUBJECT UP TO 3000 WORDS ARE WELCOME FROM ALL WRITERS. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE A NEW OR UNPUBLISHED WRITER TO SUBMIT MATERIAL. Are you a new writer?
Perhaps you have been writing for some time but without any real success? Are
you frustrated by constant rejection slips? Do you feel you may be doing something
wrong but can’t quite work out what? If any of these questions apply to you,
the following may be just what you are looking for… The
Debut Fiction project from Park Publications will have two purposes: the first is to produce
a new, quality short fiction magazine containing short stories by new and more
experienced writers; the second will be helping writers to get their work
published. We will be providing a help and advice service, which will point writers
in the right direction towards the ultimate goal of seeing their work in
print. THE
COST: An annual subscription
will be £15.00. Overseas - £20.00. This price will include four quarterly
issues of Debut and a FREE critique
on all stories submitted throughout the subscription. A subscription would
also qualify the subscriber to FREE entry in any of our regular writing
competitions. For non-subscribers who
request a critique, a fee of £5.00 per story will apply. Non-subscribers,
who do not require a critique,
must pay an entry fee of £3.00 per story. All
stories submitted must be
unpublished and may be up to 3000 words on any subject. Please enclose a
stamped, self-addressed envelope for the return of unsuccessful material and
your critique. Stories accepted for publication will appear in the next
appropriate issue of Debut.
Unsuccessful work will be returned with a detailed critique (if requested) as
soon as possible. Please allow up to ten weeks for a decision and critique. The first issue of Debut will be published during February 2009.
Subsequent issues will be published in May, August, and November each year.
To apply for an annual subscription beginning with the February 2009 issue,
please send a cheque or Postal Order for £15.00. Overseas - £20.00 (made
payable to Park Publications) to Debut, 14 The Park, Stow on the Wold,
Cheltenham, Glos. GL54 1DX. As soon as we receive the application for your
subscription you may send in stories for a free critique. If you wish, you
may even send a story with the subscription. Stories
accepted for publication in Debut will appear in the next appropriate issue and
will be automatically entered into a quarterly competition where the best
three stories in each issue will be awarded prizes of £75.00. £25.00 and
£15.00. Two highly commended writers will receive a free annual subscription
to Debut. All other contributors
will receive a free copy of the magazine in which their work appears.
Contributors who are also annual subscribers will receive one copy of the
issue in which their work appears and a credit voucher to the value of
£4.00., which may be used for future subscriptions or entry fees in our
competitions etc. There are no closing dates for submissions. Your critique will indicate, in a helpful, friendly and (most
importantly) honest manner, the good points in your story - and the
not-so-good. The editor will explain where you are going wrong and how you
can improve your story. Main focus points for examination will be dialogue,
characterisation and plot.
Suggestions for improvement will be made and if your work shows real promise,
you will be asked to re-write your story and submit again with a view to it
being published in Debut. The
editor’s criticism will be fair and constructive; please accept it in the
spirit it is offered. Please allow up to ten weeks for a decision and
critique. Please
do not submit more than one story at a time. SUBMISSION
