Do you feel you may be doing something wrong but can’t quite work out what? If any of these questions apply to you, the following may be just what you are looking for…

The Debut Fiction project from Park Publications has two main aims: the first is to produce a quality short fiction magazine containing short stories by new and more experienced writers; the second is helping writers to get their work published. An annual subscription entitles you to free entry in all Park Publications’ competitions plus free critiques for any unsuccessful Debut submission.

Debut is published in February, May, August, and November each year.

All stories submitted must be previously unpublished and may be up to 3000 words on any subject. Please enclose a stamped, self-addressed envelope for the return of unsuccessful material and your critique. Stories accepted for publication will appear in the next appropriate issue of Debut. Unsuccessful work will be returned with a critique (if requested) as soon as possible. Please allow approx. ten weeks for a decision and critique. This time scale may vary either way depending on the amount of submissions we are receiving. Please feel free to contact us at any time to confirm arrival.

Stories accepted for publication in Debut will appear in the next appropriate issue and will be automatically entered into a quarterly competition where the best three stories in each issue will be awarded prizes of £75.00. £25.00 and £15.00. All other contributors will receive a free copy of the magazine in which their work appears. Contributors who are also annual subscribers will receive one copy of the issue in which their work appears and a credit voucher to the value of £4.00., which may be used for future subscriptions or entry fees in our competitions etc. There are no closing dates for submissions.

Your critique will indicate, in a helpful, friendly and (most importantly) honest manner, the good points in your story - and the not-so-good. The editor will explain where you are going wrong and how you can improve your story. Main focus points for examination will be dialogue, characterisation and plot. Suggestions for improvement will be made and if your work shows real promise, you will be asked to re-write your story and submit again with a view to it being published in Debut. The editor’s criticism will be fair and constructive; please accept it in the spirit it is offered. Please allow up to ten weeks for a decision and critique.

Please do not submit more than one story at a time.

Stories can be up to 3000 words and on any subject: humour, romance, horror, sci-fi etc. We need stories that are fresh and original; stories with gripping plots; stories about interesting characters that the reader can sympathise with and believe in. Most of all, we want stories that entertain and delight, leaving the reader with a smile on the face or a lump in the throat. Be aware that one of the main reasons for rejection of short stories is that the outcome is predictable. Unless there is an element of tension or uncertainty, the reader will not bother to finish the story. Focus your attention on plot, interesting characters and a good and satisfying ending.
